The triumph of courage

28; the number of days in the lunar month, the number of days in a woman’s menstrual cycle… and the age that I attain today.

Humbly and with a sense of responsibility to make the most of this year, I take on the challenge of this new adventure. I am deeply blessed to be alive, loved, healthy, of sound mind and living out the purpose that I feel that I am here to fulfil.

28 is a perfect number in many ways. It represents the mythical, magical and mathematical. It is the essence of my womanhood and the timed journey of the moon’s journey around our planet. Here are a few more reasons why the number – and age – 28 rocks:

28 is a composite number, its proper divisors being 1, 2, 4, 7, and 14.

28 is a harmonic divisor number, a happy number, a triangular number, a hexagonal number, and a centred nonagonal number.

  • 28 is the ninth and last number in early Indian magic square of order 3.

As this year of perfection and potential thereof moves forward, I wish for the triumph of courage, as so aptly captured by one of my favourite poets, Lebo Mashile.

The triumph of courage

Somewhere in the annals of time

There is a record

Of the instant

When the imprint was left

On your life’s shoes

Too big to fill

Too small to hold me with certainty

But for one waif-thin moment

We held the black sky of morning together

Riding radio waves to an unexpected beach

Where fear takes leave

And we are left

With the triumph of courage…

This year is the year of triumph, of courage; and of the triumph of courage.
